“This two-unit introductory course addresses students with disabilities and
how schools can provide them with the full array of educational opportunities
offered to other students. The course examines the needs and rights of
exceptional students in the general education classroom. The course will
survey the legal and organizational contexts of referral, identification,
assessment, and programming for students with disabilities in K-12 education.
The role of the general education teacher in the processes of identification
and diagnosis of unique learning needs, consideration of cultural and
linguistic characteristics, program development including instructional
techniques material modification, collaboration with families and support
personnel will be highlighted. This course encompasses competencies required
by Title 5 Regulations: Section 80032.2 and Section 44259 related to special
education training for classroom teachers."
