Surveying United States history from its European, African, and Native American origins to 1865. It also analyzes many of Ameri- ca’s political, social, economic, and intellectual institutions, as they impact ethnic, racial, gender, and class relations, and how these in- fluence American contemporary life. These analyses also emphasize such historical concepts as cause and effect, multiple causation, and historical interpretation.
