Survey of major themes and issues of the history of the United States with a particular focus upon African Americans and the gendered racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity within the nation. Contacts between European peoples and the indigenous peoples o the New World to the establishment of the British colonies in North America, the formation of the nation, its expansion westward and the social, political and economic factors which lead to division. Examination of the role of race and slavery as evolving concepts and practices affecting the nation's development. Analysis of the role of local, state and federal governments and the constitution as institutions of both consistency and change.
