In this course students will examine the foundations of democracy, the institutions of American and California government, and how politics fit into the foundational ideas and structure of our democracy. You will analyze the system and structure of government by considering the contours of democracy and power when looking at political issues. Thinking critically about the tensions between the concepts of equality, freedom, order, participation (among others) is central in this course. This course satisfies the FRC graduation requirement and partially satisfies the CSU requirement for instruction in U.S. and California ideals and institutions of government. It is also transferable to the UC system and to most private colleges.
