HIST 2763- This course will examine the creation and growth of the American Republic from the earliest colonization of North America, to the period of Reconstruction following the Civil War. A mixture of domestic and foreign policy issues will be examined, as the United States develops internally, and as it takes its place internationally among the great powers. Politically, the American experiment with republican democracy will be examined in detail--from the Declaration of Independence, to the Constitutional amendments following the Civil War. Most importantly, the recurring trends in American history will be examined. By understanding our history as a nation, and by looking at the decisions made in the past by our leaders, students should gain insights into the reasoning behind current policy decisions made by contemporary governmental leaders.
